SOU's Frantz, Roudebush qualify for nationals

Southern Oregon's Seena Frantz and Levi Roudebush both secured NAIA automatic qualifying marks at Friday's San Francisco State Distance Carnival.

Frantz, an All-American on SOU's women's cross country team, finished 14th in her section of the 5,000 with a school-record time of 17:46.54 to easily best the automatic standard. Roudebush finished third in the 1,500 with a time of 3:51.55 to stamp his ticket to the National Championships.

Also for the Raiders, Laurie Stoutenburgh (38:59.93) and Kristen Juveland (39:22.25) both earned NAIA provisional qualifying marks in the 10,000.

Other results for the SOU women included Tara Krempley (18:29.94) finishing eighth and Anya Martinez (18:35.27) 10th in their section of the 5,000, and Kelly Clark finished 13th in 12:08.56 in the 3,000 steeplechase.

The Raiders had nine runners compete in the men's 5,000. Zach Elliott finished fourth in his section of the 5,000 with a time of 15:16.82 and was followed by Hector Aleman (sixth, 15:19.91), Andrew Milne (12th, 15:25.85), Josh Seitz (16th, 15:31.96) and Ruben Martinez (20th, 15:39.72). In the other section of the 5,000, Brett Hornig finished fifth in 15:47.02, Jerrod Puckett finished seventh in 15:53.51 and Nik Walker finished 18th in 16:05.33.

Also for the SOU men, Wendell Sells finished third in the 100 (11.23) and fifth in the 200 (23.26), Peter Stice (2:00.88) finished seventh in his section of the 800 and Kurtis Semph (2:04.51) finished sixth in his section of the 800 and Colin McRoberts finished sixth in the 3,000 steeplechase in 9:54.56.

Women's Tennis

RAIDERS SPLIT — At Caldwell, Idaho, SOU finished the regular season with a split, losing a 5-4 match to Montana State-Billings before defeating College of Idaho, 8-1, in the season finale.

The Raiders wrapped up the season 4-7 overall and will host the Ashland Tennis Club in an exhibition match on April 3.

In the setback to MSU-Billings, SOU's duo of Liz Kiger and Emma Wilson won 8-5 for the lone doubles victory. Lexi Thomas won the No. 2 singles match and Wilson and Kayla Carroll won the Nos. 5 and 6 singles matches in third set tiebreakers.


SOU 5-3, CORBAN 4-8 — At Salem, Southern Oregon came away with its third straight Cascade Conference split, winning the opener against Corban, 5-4, and then dropping the nightcap, 8-3.

In the opener, junior Karri Johnson picked up her third straight victory for the Raiders (7-13, 3-3 CC) and held the Warriors (11-16, 3-3) to seven hits.

SOU cut its deficit to 3-2 after Kathryn Moy got on base by an error and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by Meghan Laughlin in the fifth inning.

In the sixth, senior Bailey Price hit a leadoff double and Johnson then helped herself with a run-scoring single and eventually scored on an RBI single by Moy for a 4-3 lead.

The Warriors tied the game in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI single, but in the top of the seventh, Price walked and moved to second on a single by Jessica Flores and then came around to score on a fielder's choice and an error.

Johnson, Moy, Price and Rayna Okimoto all had two hits for the Raiders.

In the nightcap, the Warriors hit five home runs — including three by catcher Tamara Feb.

Junior Sarah Wharton led the SOU offense with a two-run single.
