SOU's Binney to step down June 1

Southern Oregon University cross country coach Marnie Binney has resigned, effected June 1.

Binney, who is also the distance coach for the track and field program, oversaw cross country for two seasons.

Under her guidance, SOU sent five runners to the national championships. Her men's team was ranked as high as 11th nationally last fall.

In her third year with the track program under head coach Mike Jones, Binney has coached four All-Americans and has three runners who have qualified for nationals in May.

Binney is a special education teacher for the Medford School District.

"It has been difficult to be the only head coach not on campus full time and really do the job justice," she said in a release. "I don't feel as if I have given the athletes the attention and personal time they truly require at this level. It has been tough to have the time necessary to really move the program forward. I hold the student-athletes dear to my heart and will genuinely miss them."

Binney, a Klamath Falls native, ran for Brigham Young University, then served as head coach for cross country teams at Klamath Union and North Medford. She then coached the Oregon women's team for two years before joining SOU.
