SOU men win fourth straight over OIT

KLAMATH FALLS — Turnovers kept the Southern Oregon University men's basketball team from getting off many shots in the first half Tuesday night at Oregon Tech, but Jeff Bush made sure the Raiders got plenty of good looks in the second half.

Bush dominated from the point guard position, orchestrating fourth-ranked SOU's fourth straight win over the No. 21 Owls with 12 assists, eight points and four rebounds in a 75-59 nonconference decision at Danny Miles Court.

The senior served up five of those assists in the first 10 minutes of the second half, when the Raiders (6-1 overall) made nine of their first 14 shots to extend a five-point halftime lead to 56-39. Tim Weber dropped in a pair of layups with Bush's help during the run and finished with 17 points, nine rebounds, seven assists and two blocks.

The Owls (4-4) kept it close in the first stanza by getting off 15 more shots than SOU — though they made one fewer on 26.8-percent accuracy (10-for-38) — as the Raiders turned the ball over 11 times with six offensive fouls.

That changed in a hurry after the break. SOU went on to give it away just four more times.

The Raiders got three solid performances out of their frontcourt: David Sturner dropped in 19 points and 10 rebounds, Eric Thompson had 14 and nine and David West came off the bench with 12 points.

Oregon Tech's highly touted defense had few answers as SOU shots 54.9 percent (28-for-51) for the game.

The Raiders hadn't won four in a row against OIT since pulling it off from 1969-72. They've also won two straight on OIT's home floor after ending a 14-year dry spell last January.

Kyle Waits led the Owls with 18 points and 11 boards.

OIT never led, though, after Weber put in the first basket of the game from downtown. Weber was 5-for-6 from the field and Sturner 7-for-8.

SOU shot 6-for-12 from 3-point range, while OIT's 7-for-29 effort contributed to a 32.4-percent overall performance.

The Raiders and Owls will both be in Ashland for the Flagship Inn Classic on Friday and Saturday at Bob Riehm Arena. SOU plays first against New Hope Christian and then against Southeastern (Fla.), tipping at 7:30 both nights.
