The Southern Oregon University men’s wrestling team has been picked to finish fourth in the Cascade Conference on a vote of the league’s coaches.
Montana State-Northern, which finished fourth at last year’s NAIA Championships and returns five All-Americans, was picked to win the CCC with four first-place votes. Menlo (Calif.), which shared the first-ever CCC title with SOU last year, was picked second with three first-place votes. Providence (Mont.) came in third, and SOU picked up the final first-place vote.
The Raiders bring back eight starters and 20 wrestlers overall from last year’s team that went 12-5 in dual matches, including 8-3 against conference competition. After winning the conference meet, they went on to take 16th at the national meet.
Seniors Tanner Fischer (197 pounds) and Devin Poppen (141) will be defending their CCC individual championships. Chandler Michael (149) was the lone Raider to earn All-America status last year, though Fischer and Hunter Hodges (157) both did so in previous seasons.
SOU will debut at home with an exhibition against Southwestern Oregon C.C. on Nov. 2 at 6 p.m. The next day, the 1987-88 Raiders will be inducted to the SOU Sports Hall of Fame.
This season’s CCC Championships will be held Feb. 15-16 in Great Falls, Mont.
