SOU brings experience to new season

ASHLAND — The Southern Oregon women's basketball team brings some impressive college experience to the court for the 2010-11 season as the Raiders prepare to open this weekend.

Southern Oregon travels to Bethany on Saturday, CSU-Maritime on Sunday and William Jessup on Tuesday.

Picked to finish second in the conference and receiving votes in the NAIA Preseason Top 25 poll, SOU will need that experience to make up for the graduation of standout post Jacki Speer.

Leading the group of returners are seniors Whitney Scott, Krystal Smith, Carly Wood and Lindsey Scheffler, who have each played three years under sixth-year head coach Lynn Kennedy.

Senior Jamie Roupp had two years experience at the NCAA Division I level before transferring to SOU last year.

Junior Josi McDermott is new to the SOU program, but she played the past two seasons at NCAA Division I Utah.

Sophomore Alexi Smith transferred to SOU after putting up impressive numbers at Bakersfield College last year.

Scott, Krystal Smith, Wood, Roupp and McDermott figure to be in the starting lineup as the Raiders open up.

Scott is returning after sitting out last year with an injury. As a junior in 2008-09, she earned all-conference honors by averaging 13.1 points. She also ranks high on SOU's career 3-point list and is member of the program's 1,000-point club.

Roupp averaged six points and five rebounds for the Raiders last year and is going to be counted on to play a bigger role this year.

Krystal Smith and Wood have spent the majority of their careers at SOU either starting or playing key minutes off the bench.

"Top to bottom, we are very athletic," Kennedy said. "We have a great group of returners, but also an amazing group of underclassmen and freshmen."

Kennedy will also be looking at sophomores Molly Doran and Celonna Arrington and freshmen Kiara Moore, Nalani Barnes, RaTanya Newsome and Nicole Mowbray to supply big minutes during the season.
