Simon Fraser pushes past SOU

ASHLAND — The Simon Fraser men's basketball team overcame an early double-digit deficit to take a two-point halftime lead and then pulled away in a 73-60 victory over Southern Oregon Sunday.

Jordan Highland led SOU (5-4) with 17 points, while Eric Thompson posted 14 points and 10 rebounds. Javari Williams led SFU (4-2) with 19 points, while Jordan Sergent finished with 18 points, Matt Raivio added 15 and Justin Brown tallied 10.

Southern Oregon built a double-digit lead early in the first half. The Raiders opened the game on a 12-2 run, with Thompson scoring nine of the first 12 points for SOU. A few minutes later Highland hit a pair of free throws to make it 19-8, but consecutive three-pointers by Sergent, Zack Frehlick and Raivio made it a two-point game and a couple of Williams free throws tied it up at 19.

Simon Fraser's lead reached 10 points midway through the second half on a Raivio layup that made it 56-46. The Clan stretched its advantage to 16 a couple minutes later and the Raiders never pulled closer than 13 the rest of the way.

The Raiders return to action Dec. 2 when they host Northwest Christian in their Cascade Collegiate Conference opener.
