Raiders' Waroff wins title in the decathlon

ASHLAND — Southern Oregon senior Alex Waroff had a strong second day and claimed the decathlon title at the SOU Spring Break Multi-Event Championships Tuesday at Raider Stadium.

Waroff finished with a career-best 6,390 points to edge College of the Siskiyous Stephen Dickinson's 6,233 points. Justin Smith of Southwestern Oregon finished third with 5,202 points.

In the heptathlon, Concordia's Dominique Jacoy broke the 4,000-point plateau with a score of 4,015. SOU's Rosie Converse was second with 3,732 points, and Southwestern Oregon's Kelsea Johnson (3,622) and Maria Ciccarelli (2,542) finished third and fourth.

After finishing third in the 110-meter hurdles to start the day with a time of 16.80 seconds, Waroff made huge strides by winning the discus (133-0), pole vault (12-113/4) and javelin (157-0).

Waroff finished off his day by finishing second in the 1,500 with a personal-best time of 4:49.10.

Converse's final day in the heptathlon was highlighted by a second-place finish in the 800 with a season-best time of 2:35.35. The senior also finished third in the long jump (13-73/4) and third in the javelin (86-3).


BARRY TIES FOR 13TH — At Junction City, Medford native Mike Barry of Oregon State tied for 13th place in the Oregon Duck Invitational at Shadow Hills Country Club Tuesday.

Barry, a senior, shot a final-round 74, giving him and 1-over-par 217 over three rounds in the two-day event. His other scores were 73 and 70. Teammate Diego Velasquez tied for fourth at 212 as the Beavers placed with third with a 1,088 team score.

Host Oregon won its second tournament of the season with a 7-under 1,073. The Ducks' Daniel Miernicki was medalist, closing with a tournament-low round of 67 to finish at 7-under 209.


OREGON 7, SOUTHERN UTAH 1 — At Eugene, catcher Eddie Rodriguez drove in four runs to back a solid pitching performance by Madison Boer as Oregon won before 1,758 fans at PK Park.

Rodriguez was 3-for-3 with two runs and four RBIs.

Oregon, 17-6, won for the 12th time in its last 13 games.

The Ducks broke the game open with a three-run fifth inning. KC Serna was hit by a pitch leading off and was forced at second by Marcus Piazzisi. Jack Marder singled to put Ducks at first and second before Rodriguez doubled off the left-field wall to score both runners.

Rodriguez then scored on Steven Packard's single for a 5-0 lead.

Boer, the Oregon starter, struck out seven, allowed four hits and walked two in five innings to even his record at 1-1 on the season.

Southern Utah dropped to 4-13.


BEAVER HONORED — Oregon State senior Mandi Rodriguez was honored as the Pac-10 Conference's special performer of the week.

Rodriguez, a native of Baldwin, Calif., recorded a personal-best 9.95 on the vault for the third time this season to capture the win as the seventh-ranked Beavers defeated No. 18 Kentucky, 196.650-195.275.

The senior also captured the individual titles on the floor with a 9.925 and the all-around with a score of 39.425 as OSU improved to 13-3.
