PORTLAND — The Southern Oregon University men’s wrestling team finished the dual portion of its schedule with five wins by fall in a 51-3 defeat of Warner Pacific on Tuesday night at C.C. Perry Gym.
Pancho Barrera (125 pounds), Justin Coon (133) and Devin Poppen (141) opened the match with consecutive pins, and Chandler Michael (157) and Hunter Hodges (165) later delivered two more. Cody Stahl (174) added a win by decision and the Knights forfeited the final three weight classes.
The Raiders ended with a 6-8 dual record and split the season series with WPU. Coon was the only winner by fall in the lineup for the first matchup.
Barrera, ranked fifth in the NAIA 125-pound class, bounced back from a pair of losses to ranked opponents last week to pin Kaleo Gambala in 3:43. Coon finished Louis Palos with 25 seconds left in the first round, and Poppen needed 32 seconds to make Aaron Vang his 14th fall victim of the season and the 69th of his career.
Michael improved to 14-5 with his 10th pin, in 5:17 against Chas Peterson, and Hodges got Mark Meier on his back within a minute. Stahl’s decision went 6-1 over Jonathan Moskowitz.
SOU will be off until the Cascade Conference Championships, hosted on Feb. 15 and 16 by Providence (Mont.) in Great Falls, Montana.
SOU 47, WARNER PACIFIC 1: At Portland, with a sweep of four contested classes and the help of six forfeits, the Southern Oregon University women’s wrestling team ran up its most lopsided win ever at C.C. Perry Gym.
The Raiders improved to 9-7 in duals and will have their last of the season on Feb. 20 at top-ranked Menlo (Calif.). Before then, they’ll head to Atlanta to compete at the WCWA National Championships on Friday and Saturday.
Two Raiders won by fall: 123-pounder Kirra Saunders, who pinned Kaitlyn Funai in 2:47, and 170-pounder Latiana Tauaese, who took Taj Vierra in 1:11.
Anesia Ramirez (130 pounds) wrapped up a 17-2 technical fall victory against Trynadii Rocha with 45 seconds left in the first round, and Olivia Pizano (155) shut out Zion Vierra, 6-0, in her decision.
