Raiders finish with two champions in Spokane

SPOKANE, Wash. — A pair of Southern Oregon wrestlers earned individual championships and 10 total wrestlers placed as the No. 1 Raiders tallied 183.5 points to place second at the Spokane Open Sunday.

Southern Oregon finished behind only fourth-ranked Great Falls (268) points in the tournament, with its team-total ranking ahead of groups from Oregon State, Simon Fraser, Montana State Northern and Boise State, among others. The Raiders will return to action in two weeks, when they travel to Forest Grove for the Pacific Invitational on Dec. 3.

Top-ranked Mitchell Lofstedt, a former Roseburg High standout, closed out a strong week with the individual title in the 125-pound weight class, winning all four bouts by fall. He pinned Austin Hudson (unattached from Yakima Valley Community College) in 1:58 in the first round, Jared Berlinger (unattached from Great Falls) in 1:18 in the quarterfinal, Patrick Neal (Great Falls) in 4:34 in the semifinal and Danny Luttrell (unattached from Great Falls) in 4:08 in the championship round.

Fourth-ranked Austin Vanderford earned the title in the 184-pound bracket. He pinned his first two opponents, taking down Billy Monroe (unattached from YVCC) in 3:44 in the quarterfinal and Manvir Sahota (unattached from Simon Fraser) in 29 seconds in the semifinal. In the championship bout, Vanderford defeated Clete Hanson (unattached from SFU) by major decision 11-2.
