Raiders drop pair at SOU Invite

The Southern Oregon softball team fell victim to a pair of big innings as it went 0-2 at the Southern Oregon Invitational at U.S. Cellular Community Park on Saturday.

The Raiders fell 5-3 to Simpson to open the day, then lost to Holy Names, 9-6, in the day's final game.

In the opener, Rayna Okimoto's fourth home run of the year gave SOU a 1-0 lead, and starting pitcher Karri Johnson kept the Red Hawks' bats silent through five innings of work by allowing just two hits.

In the sixth, Simpson exploded. A leadoff home run by Morgan Davis tied the game at 1. After an out, Simpson went on a run in which seven of eight batters reached base and the Red Hawks ended up with a 5-1 lead.

The Raiders rallied in the bottom of the sixth as Brooke Springer walked and scored on a double by Katie Moy. Okimoto scored Moy on a single to right, but that's as close as the Raiders would get.

Okimoto went 3-for-3 for the Raiders.

Against Holy Names, the Raiders again jumped out early.

A single by Danielle Batson and a double by Moy gave the Raiders a 1-0 lead after the first inning.

Southern Oregon added three in the bottom of the second inning. Holy Names scored six in the top of the third on four hits and two errors to take a 6-4 lead and then added single runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh for a 9-4 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh.

SOU (2-7) wraps up the weather-shortened event today with a doubleheader against Holy Names starting at 10 a.m.
