Portland women fall to Stanford

STANFORD, Calif. — Christen Press scored in the 86th minute and Stanford defeated Portland 1-0 Friday night in the quarterfinals of the NCAA women's soccer playoffs.

The loss snapped a 19-match winning streak for the Pilots, who have been eliminated in the quarterfinals by a one-goal margin in each of the last three season.

Stanford will face No. 1 Notre Dame in a semifinal match next Friday in Cary, N.C.

"It was a great game played by both teams and decided by one goal. It was also one of the best defensive performances of the season by our team," Pilot coach Garrett Smith said. "These are the games that we really love, but in reality only one team ends the season happy and that is the national champs. Nobody likes to lose."

Stanford goalie Kira Maker stopped three shots, while Portland 's Kelsey Davis finished with eight saves.
