OSU's Barry moves into tie for eighth

BREMERTON, Wash. — Mike Barry improved to 1-over-par for the tournament thanks to a second-round 71 Friday to help move Oregon State under the cut line in fifth place at the NCAA Men's Golf Gold Mountain Regional.

Barry, a redshirt senior from Medford, sits in a tie for eighth place through two rounds and leads the entire field in pars with 28. He carded a 73 on Thursday and leads the Beavers at 144.

Oregon State sophomore Morten Madsen tied Barry for the low round of the day for the Beavers and improved 21 spots on the leaderboard to move into a tie for 44th.

Senior Diego Velasquez is tied for 32nd overall after shooting a 5-over 77 during the second round and is 5 over for the event. Alex Moore finished the day with a 5-over second round and is tied for 40th while Paul Peterson is tied for 52nd after shooting an 81.

Oregon State sits in fifth place overall for the tournament, which is just on the cut line for advancing to the NCAA Men's Golf National Championships at The Honors Course in Chattanooga, Tenn. The Beavers are seeking their first trip to nationals since the 2000-01 season.

DUCKS MAINTAIN LEAD — At Santee, Calif., top-seeded Oregon remained in first place, shedding the three teams it began the day tied with at the NCAA Southwest Regional by shooting 2-over 290 in the second round at Carlton Oaks Golf Club.

The Ducks are 8 over and hold a two-stroke lead over California with 18 holes to play.

Daniel Miernicki continued his strong play, firing a 3-under 69 to move into a second-place tie. He trails Nick Delio of Cal State Northridge by one stroke, sitting at 3-under 141.


OREGON 1, AUBURN 0 — At Atlanta, Oregon freshman pitcher Jessica Moore lifted the Ducks to a win over Auburn (30-25) in NCAA tournament opening round action at Newborn Field on the Georgia Tech campus.

En route to her fifth shutout of the season, Moore (15-11) struck out four, walked one, and scattered seven hits against the Tigers.

The Ducks (34-19) scored the game's only run in the sixth inning after freshman left field Allie Burger led off with a slap single and advanced to second base on an errant throw by the second baseman.


ARIZONA STATE 10, OREGON STATE 4 — At Tempe, Ariz., Oregon State dropped a decision to third-ranked Arizona State to start its three-game series at Packard Stadium.

OSU (27-20, 9-13 Pacific-10 Conference) got as close as 6-4 before ASU pulled away.

All told, the Sun Devils (44-6, 17-5) finished with 14 hits. Of those 14, seven went for extra bases.

WASHINGTON 13, OREGON 11 — At Seattle, Danny Pulfer went 2-for-6 with four RBIs as Oregon (35-19, 10-12 Pac-10) fell on the road.

The Ducks recorded 15 hits, while Washington pounded out 20 hits.
