Oregon's Masoli gets some Pac-10 props

Booed by the home crowd just two games ago, Oregon quarterback Jeremiah Masoli is now getting applause, courtesy of the Pacific-10 Conference.

Masoli was recognized as the Pac-10 offensive player of the week in the wake of the Ducks' 55-45 victory over Arizona this past Saturday.

Masoli completed 21 of 26 passes for 298 yards and two touchdowns and no interceptions. He also had 10 carries for 89 yards and three scores. He had 387 yards of Oregon's 504 yards of total offense.

It was the second time Masoli has been named the league's offensive player of the week.

"Masoli throws the ball incredibly well. He's better than a lot of people think," Arizona coach Mike Stoops said.

Fans at Autzen Stadium booed the Ducks the previous week, when they defeated Stanford 35-28. The jeers were directed in part at Masoli, who has relied on his strong running ability rather than his passing attack.

Oregon's problems in the air were highlighted in a 26-16 loss to California, when Masoli threw for just 44 yards.

But against the Cardinal, Masoli ignored the boos and completed 11 of 21 passes for 144 yards and a touchdown, and also running for 46 yards. He orchestrated the game-winning drive for the Ducks in the final two minutes, which included a 25-yard quarterback scramble on third down.

Oregon (8-3, 6-2 Pac-10) has a bye this week before visiting Oregon State in the annual Civil War rivalry game.

Joining Masoli in claiming conference honors this week was Oregon State defensive tackle Stephen Paea, and kick returners C.J. Gable of USC and James Rodgers of the Beavers.

NOT-SO-BASIC BLACK: It's a bye week for the Ducks, and that brings one certainty: Oregon can't unveil a new uniform.

Last Saturday the Ducks showed off their new black "Lights Out" unis with a flourish, changing out of dark green after warmups before charging onto the field in all black for the game against Arizona.

The Nike uniforms feature stylized silver "wings" on the shoulders, and a matte blackish-green helmet.

Oregon has become famous — or infamous, depending on how you look at it — for its revolving uniforms. It's a benefit of having Nike co-founder Phil Knight as your team's biggest booster.

Who can forget when Oregon unleashed its neon yellow uniforms and the Ducks were dubbed "The Human Highlighters?"

Quite a few pundits have chastised the Ducks for pilfering a color used by a certain team just north of Eugene.

Blogging for Oregonlive.com, Oregonian reporter Paul Buker wrote: "My take: maybe if the Ducks throw in orange socks, or orange piping on those black jerseys, they will actually PLAY like the guys in orange and black and win a big game in November."

But there's one more thing to ponder: There are reports that Oregon will have a complete uniform redesign in 2010.

EXTRA POINTS: Oregon RB LeGarrette Blount has 15 rushing touchdowns, tying the school record set by Saladin McCullough in 1996. His TDs rushing also lead the Pac-10 this season. ... Oregon Coach Mike Bellotti was giving his players Friday and Saturday off as part of the bye week.
