Oregon prepares for Creighton

EUGENE — The University of Oregon men's basketball team (19-17) will play Creighton (22-14) in Game 1 of the best-of-three College Basketball Invitational championship series on Monday night.

Tip time for the contest is 5 p.m. at Qwest Center Omaha. Game 2, which will be played at Matthew Knight Arena in Eugene, is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Wednesday.

A deciding Game 3 (if necessary) is scheduled for Friday in Eugene.

Oregon is 1-0 all-time against the Bluejays. Oregon won 75-64 in the only meeting back on Dec. 26, 1974, in a game played in Portland.

Creighton defeated San Jose State (85-74), Davidson (102-92) and Central Florida (82-64) en route to the championship series. The Bluejays are 4-1 in March, with their only loss a 60-50 decision to Missouri State in the Missouri Valley Conference tournament.

Oregon defeated Boise State, 79-71, in the semifinal round last Wednesday. UO beat Duquesne 77-75 in last week's quarterfinal game, while also recording a 68-59 win over Weber State in the opening round.

The Ducks are 5-1 in their last six games, the only loss coming to Washington (69-51) in the Pac-10 Tournament semifinal round.

Senior forward Joevan Catron has tallied three consecutive double-doubles to open CBI tournament play. Catron currently ranks third in the CBI's history for rebounding average (11.3), while ranking fourth in total rebounds (34).

Sophomore forward E.J. Singler has bettered his offensive numbers in Oregon's Pac-10 Tournament and CBI contests. In the last six games, the former South Medford High standout is averaging 16.8 points per game, while shooting 53.4 percent on field goals He's also shooting 50 percent on 3-pointers and 96.3 percent from the free-throw line.

On the season, Singler leads the Pac-10 in free-throw shooting percentage (.871, 101-of-116), ranks second on the team in scoring (11.7 ppg), rebounding (5.6 rpg), blocks (0.7 bpg) and 3-point field goal percentage (.395, 51-of-129).

Singler is the only Oregon player to have started all 36 games this season.
