ASHLAND — Southern Oregon overcame a slow start against Northwest to defeat the Eagles 3-1 (21-25, 26-24, 25-21, 25-18) in Cascade Collegiate Conference volleyball Friday.
With the win, 18th-ranked SOU improves to 7-4 overall and 4-2 in the CCC. Northwest is 5-6 and 3-3.
Northwest won the battle of two teams struggling on the attack in the opening set, as the Eagles hit .150 to SOU's .116 attack percentage.
Southern Oregon took the first three points of the second set, but Northwest tied it at 5-5 and eventually took a three-point lead at 14-11. The Raiders tied it at 15-15, and neither team led by more than two points the rest of the set.
The third set continued the back-and-forth string of the previous two games. SOU got kills from Haley Fikso, Renee Yomtob and Sarah Holgen to set up match point, and Brookelynn Cole sealed the victory with a service ace.
Holgen led both teams with 17 kills and also picked up 19 digs. Megan Bartling finished with 13 kills and a .407 attack percentage, while Fikso added 10 kills.
SOU 0, WESTMINSTER 0 — At Portland, Southern Oregon University and No. 24 Westminster (Utah) couldn't score in 110 minutes and settled for the tie.
The Raiders are 3-4-1 overall, while Westminster is 6-3-1.
Denise Powell had four shots for the Raiders and Stephanie Carr three.
