Mustangs fall in championship

FAIRFIELD, Calif. — Joe Johnson provided a lift with a solo home run in the fifth inning, but it wasn’t enough for the Medford Mustangs American Legion AAA team in the championship game of the WABF Tournament.

Yakima Pepsi-Pak benefited from an early error by Medford and won, 3-1.

After Mustangs’ starting pitcher Nick Sanderson retired the first two batters in the first inning, a Medford fielding error kept the inning alive for the Pepsi-Pak, which responded by getting two runners aboard via walks, then a two-run single.

“We could have been out of the inning without giving anything up,” said Mustangs assistant coach Brent Watts. “That was the key part of the game.”

The Mustangs (20-6-1), who finished the tournament with a 5-1 record, struggled offensively and were only able to scatter five hits.

Johnson also doubled and finished 2-for-3 for Medford, as did Berry Hunt.
