ASHLAND — The Southern Oregon University men's and women's basketball teams will be on display in the next few days.
The men's team will play an exhibition at 7:30 tonight against a team of Raider alumni at McNeal Pavilion.
On Monday, the men's and women's teams will participate in "Moonlight Madness," beginning at 8 p.m. at McNeal, with free admission.
Tonight, the Raider men will trot out a revamped squad that has seven returners and 11 newcomers.
Among those back for 12th-year coach Brian McDermott are four former Southern Oregon Conference prep all-stars, who will all start: Matt Cowell, Jason Nunnemaker and Kory Mahr, all from Grants Pass, and Josh McDermott from Ashland.
Other returning team members are Trenton Frasher, Matt Pizzola and Austin Wolfer.
The alumni team will have Don Guy, Chris Schmerbach, Dave Arbow, Steve Farley, Hamilton Barnes, Shavon Haynes, Travis Elam, Matt Espinoza, Jeff Multanen, Scott Logue, RaShawn McAllister and Jeff Williams.
SOU opens the regular season Nov. 2-3 against Lewis & Clark State College and Carroll College in the Lewis & Clark Tournament in Lewiston, Idaho. SOU's home debut is Nov. 13 against Oregon Tech.
On Monday, there will be men's and women's team scrimmages, hot-shot, 3-point and slam-dunk contests by the players. There will also be a free-throw contest for $500 of tuition remission for fans and two specialty shot contests for a chance to win $5,000.
The first 100 fans receive a free lunch coupon and all fans will receive free popcorn and soft drinks.
Doors open at 7:45 p.m. and seating is first come, first served.
The SOU women, coached by Lynn Kennedy, were picked to finish third in the Cascade Conference. Among the Raider returners are Emily Brookins, a sophomore from Crater, and Jackie Spear.
SOU opens the season with an exhibition game Nov. 2 against Washington State at Pullman, Wash.

Two championship games for Rogue Valley Pop Warner football will be played Sunday at Spiegelberg Stadium.
At noon, the PeeWee Division title game will pit the Medford Raiders against the Ashland Grizzlies. The winner advances to the state championship Nov. 11 at Autzen Stadium in Eugene.
At 2:30 p.m., the Junior PeeWee championship will feature the Upper Rogue White Eagles against the Medford Cowboys. The winner plays the Linn-Benton Association champion at Reser Stadium in Corvallis Nov. 4. That winner advances to the state title game Nov. 11 at Autzen.
Tickets for North Medford's first-round state volleyball playoff match against McKay 6 p.m. Wednesday will be sold at the gym beginning at 5 p.m. on the day of the match. Ticket prices are $6 for adults and $4 for students.
The only passes allowed are OSAA passes. No school, district, officials association or any other passes will be accepted.
