Kent, Porter have historic nights in victory

IRVINE, Calif. — Junior guard Tajuan Porter scored 23 points to lead Oregon past UC Irvine, 84-77, at the Bren Events Center Friday night.

With the victory, Oregon coach Ernie Kent became the school's all-time winningest coach with 213 wins. He passes Howard Dobson, who totaled 212 victories.

Porter had a historic night of his own. He finished 4 of 7 from the field, including 3 of 5 on 3s, and became the 29th player in Oregon history to reach the 1,000-point mark.

Porter drained all 12 of his free-throw attempts, including a 10-for-10 effort in the final 53 seconds to hold off the Anteaters.

UC Irvine senior forward Kevin Bland led all scorers with a career-high 26 points, hitting 12 of 14 from the field.

The Ducks led 39-34 at halftime and both teams shot 62.5 percent from the field in the second half.

UC Irvine made a run, closing to within 72-66 on a layup by Bland with 1:44 remaining. But Porter was perfect from the foul line to seal the win.

Oregon shot 50.9 percent from the floor for the game and UCI shot 50.8 percent from the field.
