Jones’ last-second free throw lifts SOU

REDDING, Calif. — Senior forward Destinee Jones hit the go-ahead free throw with four-tenths of a second left, topping off her best night as a Raider and giving Southern Oregon a 59-58 win over Simpson in the season opener Monday at the James M. Grant Center.

Jones finished with career highs of 14 points, 10 rebounds and four steals, helping the 12th-ranked Raiders overcome 27-percent shooting and a 6 of 35 showing from 3.

Trailing 56-53 with less than three minutes to play, freshman Kalei Iwami sunk one of those 3-pointers to tie the game. After Madison Cox’s jumper gave the lead back to Simpson, Ariel Augustine scored with 42 seconds left to tie it again.

Jones, driving to the basket out of a timeout, got to the foul line after Whitney Armstrong attempted to take a charge but was whistled for a block.

Despite some shooting struggles, Augustine also went for a double-double with 14 points and 11 boards. Dominique Harding added eight points and five rebounds with two triples.

Simpson (3-3) shot 44 percent from the field but gave the Raiders 25 extra chances with discrepancies of 31-16 in turnovers and 19-9 on the offensive glass.
