Ex-North player Schmidt gains honor

KLAMATH FALLS — Oregon Institute of Technology's Taylor Schmidt, a 5-10 sophomore from North Medford, has been named the Cascade Conference softball pitcher of the week for March 21-27.

It's Schmidt's second such honor this season.

In three appearances in the circle, Schmidt earned three road victories. She allowed three hits each to No. 4 Concordia University and The College of Idaho and gave up just one hit at Eastern Oregon.

Schmidt pitched 19 scoreless innings and struck out 11. Schmidt also was 7-for-15 at the plate, with a home run and six RBIs.

Oregon Tech is 19-6 overall and 5-1 in conference.

SOU'S JOHNSTONE HONORED — Southern Oregon's James Johnstone has been named Cascade Conference runner of the week.

Johnstone captured the 3,000-meter steeplechase at San Francisco State Friday in 9:11.31. It's the fastest time in the NAIA this year, is an "A" qualifying mark and is the third fastest in school history. The school record is 8:53.9 by SOU Hall of Famer Kelly Jensen in 1978.


DUCKS WIN — At Goleta, Calif., Oregon won its first tournament of the year and had its third straight top-three finish at the OGIO Santa Barbara Invite at Sandpiper Golf Club.

The Ducks were 12 under par with an 852 score. Runner-up UC Santa Barbara was well back at 879.

Oregon junior Daniel Miernicki (68-72-72—212) and senior Jack Dukeminier (67-72-73—212) were medalist at 4 under. It was Miernicki's second win this season and the fourth of his career.

Hall of Fame

NOMINATIONS OPEN — Nominations for the Southern Oregon University Sports Hall of Fame are being accepted.

The deadline for consideration for the 2011 class is May 15.

The SOU Sports Hall of Fame is open to former student-athletes, coaches, administrators and friends of Raider Athletics. To be eligible, the nominee must be at least five years removed from SOU.
