Converse takes fifth in multi-event track meet

MCMINNVILLE —Southern Oregon senior Rosie Converse finished fifth in the heptathlon on the final day of the Linfield multi-event meet Tuesday.

Western Oregon's Mandy Keifer won with 4,061 points. Converse scored 3,338.

Converse placed sixth in the 800 (2:40.45), eighth in the javelin (87-0) and 11th in the long jump (13-71/2).

Alex Waroff was seventh in the decathlon for the Raiders with 5,745 points. Linfield's Josh Lovell won with 6,582.

Waroff's day included three top-five finishes: fourth in the discus (112-7), fourth in the javelin (157-2) and fourth in the 1,500 meters (4:49.60). He was sixth in the pole vault (12-71/2) and 11th in the 110 hurdles (17.53).


RAIDERS SWEPT — At Ashland, Willamette took advantage of poor Southern Oregon defense in the opener and then exploded offensively in the nightcap for a softball sweep Tuesday at University Field, 3-1 and 12-2.

Willamette, ranked eighth in NCAA Division III, is 12-1. SOU is 2-9 and opens Cascade Conference play at home against Concordia Friday in a 2 p.m. doubleheader.

In Game 1, Raiders' Strohm Fouty singled in the fourth and scored on Meghan Laughlin's double. The 1-0 lead stood until the top of the sixth, when Willamette scored twice on three SOU errors. The Raiders had six errors in the contest.

Freshman pitcher Jordyn Kurtz gave up four hits and struck out six.

In the second game, which Willamette put away with a six-run fifth, Fouty had two of SOU's three hits.
