Barry helps OSU to tie for second

BREMERTON, Wash. — Mike Barry was one of four Oregon State golfers to shoot 73 or better as the Beavers climbed into a tie for second place in the first round of the NCAA Men's Golf Gold Mountain Regional at the Gold Mountain Golf Course.

Diego Velasquez topped the OSU players with an even-par 72 and is tied for eighth place. Barry, a former North Medford standout, Paul Peterson and Alex Moore were one shot back.

The Beavers finished the first round 3 over with a team score of 291, tying Colorado State for second. Host Washington is in first place at 286.

The Beavers had to wait out a 90-minute rain delay, then started fast, taking the lead at 4 under through the first nine. Nasty weather then came into play.

The second round is today. OSU will be paired with Washington and Colorado State.

DUCKS SHARE LEAD — At Santee, Calif., top-seeded Oregon claimed a share of the lead in the first round of the NCAA Southwest Regiona, posting a 6-over 294 at Carlton Oaks Golf Club.

Daniel Miernicki led a balanced team attack for the Ducks, shooting even-par 72 at his hometown course. The sophomore is tied for seventh among the 75-man field, while all four of his teammates also posted top-25 scores.

California, Tennessee and UNLV are tied with Oregon.

Jack Dukeminier is tied for 12th following a 73.
