Amuchastegui falls in second round of NCAAs

ST. LOUIS — Stanford wrestler Nick Amuchastegui, a former Phoenix High standout, lost his second-round bout at 165 pounds on Thursday at the NCAA Championships.

Amuchastegui and teammate Luke Feist, also a second-round loser, will resume action in the consolation bracket this morning. Amuchastegui will wrestle Oklahoma's Ryan Smith or Illinois' No. 16 Roger Smith-Bergsrud.

Amuchastegui, a redshirt freshman, shocked All-American Nick Marable of Missouri, the fifth seed, in the opening round earlier Thursday, 5-2.

But Amuchastegui followed his victory up with a 5-1 loss to No. 12 seed Jarrod King of Edinboro in the second round. King tallied two takedowns, including one late in the third period to secure the victory and advance to the championship quarterfinals.

Amuchastegui, now 29-7 on the season, earned an at-large berth to the tournament after taking second in the Pac-10.
