Tornado, Pirates shine at RV Championships

Local wrestling squads had a fine showing at the 16-team Rogue Valley Championships on Saturday, with North Medford placing second, Phoenix third and Eagle Point fourth at North Medford High.

Henley (333.5 points) took first, followed by the Black Tornado (298), Pirates (179) and Eagles (178).

North Medford’s big bodies came up big.

The Black Tornado finished with five individual champions: Henry Cox (113 pounds) won, as did Dillon Ulrey (152) with a 9-7 decision, Wyatt Westfall (182) with a 16-13 decision and Trent Wilson (195) with 13-9 decision. North Medford’s Skyler Black (220) also picked up a finals victory.

The other local champions were North Valley’s Ricky Esparza (120) with a 3-1 decision, Cascade Christian’s Luke Valle (126) via pin, Phoenix’s Richard Orndorff (132) with a pin and Illinois Valley’s Eric Miller (138) via pin.

The local second-place finishers were Grants Pass’ Tyler Bellon (113) and teammate Trajan Hurd (145), Illinois Valley’s Logan Miller (152), Eagle Point’s James McCoy (160), Grants Pass’ Ted Sutters (170), South Medford’s Brandon Brooks (182), Phoenix’s Trace Vega (195) and teammate Papu Masalosalo (285).

ROGUE VALLEY INVITE: At Ashland, the North Medford boys took home first place in the nine-team Rogue Valley Invitational at Southern Oregon University.

On the girls side, Grants Pass won.

The Black Tornado boys finished with 271 points. Phoenix (224) was second and Grants Pass (215) third. The Pirates’ Ethan Shepherd won the 50-yard freestyle (23.28 seconds) and 100 butterfly (1:01.82), and teammate Taylor Brown was first in the 200 individual medley (2:28.13) and 500 freestyle (5:50.71).

North Medford’s 200 freestyle relay squad of Sam Watkins, Caleb Ringger, Jack Cowan and Joey Hunter was fastest (1:41.44), as was the Tornado quartet of Daniel Edmund, Bram Gibson, Jordan Edwards and Ringger in the 400 freestyle (4:12.97).

The Caver girls finished with 270 points. North Medford was second (218) and Phoenix third (169).

The Pirates’ 200 medley relay (2:08.98) and 200 freestyle squad (1:53.46) of Tiona Hurd, Lauren Speaks, Emily Samudio and Katie Duffie both claimed first.

St. Mary’s Olivia Dow earned victories in the 200 individual medley (2:29.17) and 100 breaststroke (1:13.90), and teammate Grace Jovanovic won the 50 freestyle (26.09) and 100 butterfly (1:01.25).

OISRA JAMBOREE: At Roseburg, Ashland’s Clara Honsinger took first in the 7-kilometer pursuit race at Diamond Lake.

She finished in 24 minutes, 57 seconds. South Eugene’s Katherine Quillin was second (25:43) out of six.

In the boys pursuit, Ashland’s Erik Oline was eighth (25:40) and Taylor Amarotico 11th (27:23) out of 12.
