Local ski racers fare well at state

The Ashland girls and Phoenix boys teams were the top placers in their divisions at the Oregon Interscholastic Ski Racing Association state championships last weekend at Mt. Hood Meadows.

Ashland was the leading 5A team and Phoenix the top 4A squad during combined competition.

In all-division girls scoring, Ashland was second to Lincoln, while St. Mary’s was 10th.

In boys, South Medford was ninth and Phoenix 11th.

The Ashland girls were paced by Kelsey McKelvey, who was sixth in slalom and seventh in combined. Teammate Maddie Hunkele was sixth in giant slalom and ninth combined. Ashland’s Trueda Pollard was 10th in slalom.

In other girls combined results, South Medford’s Madison Eaton was 12th, Phoenix’s Matilda Forsvall 21st, St. Mary’s Audrey Beattie 23rd and South Medford’s Elizabeth Beatty 28th.

Justin Hawkins of St Mary's was the top local boys competitor, placing sixth in the slalom, ninth in giant slalom and fifth combined.

Also in boys combined, South Medford’s AJ Flores Alatorre was 19th and Phoenix’s Bryce Kaufman 30th.
