Aug. 30-31 and Sept. 1: Backpacking trip to Mountain Lakes in the Cascades
Views, lakes and flowers abound this time of year at this high-elevation spot. Mountain Lakes are about 60 miles east of Medford on Hwy140 near Upper Klamath Lake. Trail is accessed by taking four miles of gravel road to the Varney Creek Trailhead. The first day we plan on 4.5 miles with an elevation gain of 1,566 feet to Zeb Lake. The second day we will hike six miles with an elevation gain of 1,606 feet to Lake Harriette. The third day we will travel six miles with an elevation gain of 732 feet and 1,194-foot elevation loss to the trailhead. We will spend most of our time over 6,500 feet. Hiking distances are modest and the pace will be set to the slowest participants. Carpooling opportunities will be facilitated. Costs of transportation will be shared with drivers. We will determine a rendezvous point so we can reach the trailhead about 10 a.m. Space is limited so be sure to make a reservation. Wild Rogue Hike Series
Aug. 30: The Klamath-Siskiyou Wildlands Center and Siskiyou Project is leading lead hikes into the proposed wilderness along the Lower Rogue River on the last Saturday of each month through Oct. 25. Enjoy diverse wild forests, extraordinary wildlife viewing and clear creeks tumbling into the mighty Rogue. The group will discuss wilderness and wild and scenic proposals for the area, as well as Bureau of Land Management’s logging plans in the area.
Carpools leave the Gooseberries Natural Foods parking lot (1533 N.E. F St.) in Grants Pass at 10 a.m. and will meet at the Graves Creek boat ramp at 11 a.m. Bring hiking shoes, clothing layers, food and water. Hikes are moderate and approximately five to seven miles. WOPR Hike Series
Aug. 16: Moon Prairie, Indian Plateau. Visit a relic stand of old-growth east of Ashland. Moon Prairie is currently designated as an “area of critical environmental concern” for its fish, wildlife, scenic and educational values. The BLM would eliminate this designation under all proposed WOPR alternatives. Moderate, four to five miles. Sept. 20: Long Gulch, Applegate Valley. A one-way downhill hike off-trail from the top of Long Gulch through the drainage of this unique, trellised watershed that is home to the largest block of low-elevation old-growth in the Applegate Valley. The Applegate Valley was designated as an Adaptive Management Area under the Northwest Forest Plan, and under WOPR it is proposed as a Timber Management Area. The east boundary of Long Gulch is also the proposed boundary for the Johns Peak Off-Highway Vehicle Emphasis Area. Difficult, 3.5 miles. Every Wednesday night at 5:30 p.m., a group run leaves the Rogue Valley Runners store, 161 E. Main St. in downtown Ashland. All ability levels are encouraged to show. Group runs an easy/social six to seven miles on trails and roads in and around Lithia Park. Call 201-0014 with questions.

Every Tuesday from July 29 to Aug. 19: Level 3 Nordic walking class will be held from 8:30-10 a.m. Level 3 offers challenging walks on Ashland trails using Nordic walking poles, which are provided in the class. Aug. 9: Eagle Point walk, 8 a.m. to 10:20 a.m.: Beginning at Bob Moore Park on Main Street, walk across the covered bridge and past the historic Butte Creek Grist Mill, past the middle and elementary schools, and explore the old and new parts of town. Lithia Park Nature Walks
Every Saturday, Sunday, Wednesday and Friday, 10-11:30 a.m., rain or shine, trained volunteer naturalists from Ashland Parks and Recreation will lead an easy 1.5-hour nature walk through Lithia Park. Topics will include trees, flowers, birds, climate, water, geology and the history of the park. Meet at the entrance to Lithia Park, across from the Plaza in Ashland. Free. Mountain bike rides
Every Wednesday, John’s Peak, Jacksonville: Sponsored by Cycle Analysis, these rides are for all ages and abilities and are group-oriented. They begin at 6:30 p.m. from Cycle Analysis in Jacksonville and include the John’s Peak trail system. Every ride ends with free refreshments supplied by Cycle Analysis. Helmets are required. Every Thursday, Ashland: Cycle Sport’s crew meets at the plaza at 6:30 p.m. Riders of all abilities welcome, but be able to climb for a few miles to get to the trails. Callahans Challenge Hillclimb Series
Aug. 9 and Aug. 23: A new series of hillclimbs are scheduled in August. These are individual time trials with cumulative times for the two races counting toward your overall time for the series. The first race on Aug. 9 starts at 9 a.m. at the new Project A building (formerly Maverick’s) on Highway 66 and climbs to Callahans Restaurant. The second race on Aug. 23 starts at 9 a.m. at Callahans Restaurant and finishes at the Mount Ashland Lodge. Mount Shasta Hillclimb and Summit Century
Saturday-Sunday: Local bicycling enthusiasts are organizing a timed ride up Everitt Memorial Highway Saturday, the day before the annual Mount Shasta Summit Century. Slightly over 14 miles long, the Hillclimb begins at 9 a.m. in downtown Mount Shasta and climbs up Everitt Memorial Highway to the old ski bowl, an altitude gain of over 4,100 feet. The ride is hosted by the Mount Shasta Pedali cycling club. Entry fee is $10. Awards will be given to fastest finishers by age group, and raffle prizes awarded after the ride. For the most competitive riders, Pedali is offering $100 to the first male rider who completes the climb in under 60 minutes, and to the first female rider who completes the climb in less than 70 minutes. Klamath Bird Observatory
Saturday: Klamath Bird Observatory Birdwalk to Mount Ashland. View the bird life on the highest peak of the Siskiyou Mountains. Mountain bluebirds, green-tailed towhees, white-headed woodpeckers, red-breasted Sapsuckers, and gray jays may be spotted. Meet at 8 a.m. at Northwest Nature Shop in Ashland to carpool. Bring water. Klamath River: Freeing the Waters
Friday: Madrona Arts presents two upcoming shows called Klamath River: Freeing the Waters. Local artists, environmental organizations and musicians will present art and information on key issues of the Klamath River Basin: collapse of salmon fisheries, impact on tribes, the dam controversy and the multi-stakeholder restoration settlement. The artists hope to bring renewed attention to these ecological issues through the power of art. Funds raised will be donated to Klamath River tribal environmental programs.
