Fall turkey tags available; hunter group collects food

Oregonians perhaps interested in putting their own wild turkey on the Thanksgiving or Christmas tables still have a chance to join the fall fray.

There were 676 fall turkey tags still available for sale as of Tuesday, even though the season began Oct. 15.

The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife plans to continue selling its fall turkey tags in the agency's first-come, first-serve sale that run until the Dec. 31 end of the season or the maximum of 3,000 tags is reached.

Typically, around 650 tags are still available in mid-November for the hunt, which includes the five southwest Oregon counties, as well as Benton, Polk, Marion and Linn counties, ODFW spokeswoman Michelle Dennehy says.

Hunters are allowed one turkey of either sex during the fall season, and only one tag per hunter is allowed.

Dennehy says most fall turkey hunters in late season are successful less because of what they know and more because of who they know.

Most flocks in November are loitering on private lands, usually feasting on acorns and other feed, she says.

Those who garner permission to hunt private lands with turkeys tend to do best in fall, Dennehy says.

The Rogue Valley Chapter of the Oregon Hunters Association is collecting nonperishable food items for holiday food baskets the group assembles and delivers annually to needy Rogue Valley families.

Members and nonmembers are urged to bring donations to the next monthly meeting, which is scheduled for Dec. 11 in Medford.

The chapter meetings begin at 6 p.m. at the Ramada Inn Convention Center near Food 4 Less off Biddle Road.
