Eco-friendly skateboards

Eco-friendly skateboards

Why: Twelve million kids skate in the U.S., more than are enrolled in Little League, says John Bernards, executive director of the International Association of Skateboard Companies. Since skateboarders can be expected to break at least one board a year, the industry sacrifices a lot of trees for the sport.

Who: Manufacturers such as Comet, Habitat, Loaded Boards and Sector 9 have taken the lead in introducing eco-friendly boards; Habitat boards incorporate bamboo or hemp fiberglass, Loaded Boards use bamboo, Comet uses Forest Stewardship Council-certified maple, and Sector 9 has a bamboo series.
