Time trials roll along valley roads

For the past three Sunday mornings, local cyclists have been challenging themselves in the Oregon Bicycle Racing Association's Southern Oregon Time Trial Series.

The series included courses on Antelope Road March 15, Griffin Creek March 22 and the Dark Hollow territory south of Colver Park in Phoenix last Sunday.

The racers pushed through bouts of fickle weather — sun and dry roads one day to wet conditions and snow flurries the next — and varying terrain, including steep climbs and fast descents pushing 50-plus miles an hour.

Sean Bagshaw of Ashland, who had jumped off a plane 12 hours earlier after vacationing with his family in Mexico, was in shock when he arrived Sunday at the Dark Hollow event.

"Surfing one day, riding my bike in the freezing cold next morning — this should be interesting," he said while warming up before his start.

Team Etna Brewing Co.'s Spencer Gray was the individual series champion, winning all three events, including beating his own record at the Antelope Road trial.
