4-wheelin' at Prineville

A few bad apples tearing up the countryside have made finding a legal backcountry road for your 4x4 more than a little difficult.

The Prineville BLM District offers a number of gnarly trails that will give your vehicle the workout you want. If you're not afraid of dodging boulders bigger than your 4x4, then the canyon trail in the remote area known as 4LF is custom-made for you.

For the wobbly-kneed, there are bypasses around some of these stone monsters, but the canyon floor is still filled with challenging bumps and dips.

You're going to need some lockers for more power, solid rubber on those tires and plenty of nerve. This is no place for babies. If you don't know what you're doing, stay away.

Contact the Prineville BLM Office, by phone 541-416-6700, or email OR_Prineville_Mail@blm.gov, and ask for the person in charge of backroad activities or off-road driving. Be sure to ask for directions to the trailhead and basic guidelines for off-road travel. They should also be able to provide you with trail maps and other material about the surrounding area.
