Protect the monument

I applaud the Mail Tribune’s recognition of the Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument's importance for watershed health and preservation of biodiversity. It is a remarkable place in Southern Oregon.

I am a member of the local community and I stand with the 85 scientists that have recommended expanding the CSNM, as stated by both Talent and Ashland's chambers of commerce, local city councils and mayors, along with State Rep. Peter Buckley and the late Oregon State Sen. Alan Bates.

The monument was designated to safeguard outstanding plant and animal diversity and of this special area, home to threatened species like Green’s mariposa lily, Mardon skipper butterfly, and the Oregon spotted frog.

Over the last 17 years, we have come to realize the benefits of the monument; it has become an educational resource for hundreds of university and elementary school students and has enhanced quality of life for many of us living in Southern Oregon. Local scientists also have been able to continue to make research discoveries that would otherwise have been lost.

Let's celebrate this biological haven and make sure it has the increased protections it so deserves.

Applauding Atkinson

I am excited to see that Michelle Atkinson is running for Medford City Council in Ward 4. As a 2015 graduate of St. Mary's High School and sophomore at Claremont McKenna College, I applaud her commitment to increase understanding of new technologies within the city of Medford. This will foster profitable new jobs, advanced city planning and more effective communication.

Students, entrepreneurs and community members who have access to technology will have more doors open to them to innovate for our future. Michelle is a proven businesswoman and organizer, and I am confident that a vote for Michelle is a vote for a better Medford. Keep up the great work, Michelle!

Call out the lies

A quote from Leonard Pitts Jr.: "... America of the last 20 years, where untruth is gospel, reality is multiple choice, and 'facts' are whatever you have testes enough to say and somebody is dumb enough to believe."

Golly — 20 years ago Rupert Murdoch and Roger Ailes announced the startup of the Fox News Channel. Coincidence?

Headline in the Sept. 11 Mail Tribune: "Call Trump, backers on bald-faced lies." Where was this article? On Page B6.

All political candidates and their spokespersons, all elected officials, and all "news" anchors should be called out on every lie they tell or pass on as truth. It should be immediate, and it should be front page news, not buried on the back pages. It should be the top story on every news broadcast, and the first thing that pops up on your computer screen when you long onto the internet.

The American people deserve to know when they are being lied to. And they deserve much better than the sorry excuse that passes for news these days.
