On April 19, six students from Seattle rode through Medford. They were on their way home from Washington, D.C., making their way cross-country on their bicycles to raise awareness on global warming.

Now, whether you believe in global warming or not, you have to admit that five high school students and an elementary school student taking the time to ride across the country in support of a cause is impressive. They made it across the country, battling weather, traffic and other dangers and still kept up with their homework and their Web site.

Unfortunately, this was apparently not newsworthy. Even though releases were sent to every single news outlet in the valley, only KTVL showed up when they came into town, and they were bumped off their news by stories about snow.

It's nice to know that singing veterans and prescription drug abuse was rated so much more important and interesting by the Mail Tribune than this group of friendly, inspiring kids. It's no wonder kids today become a part of gangs and other criminal activities. Even the ones who do incredible things are completely ignored.

Senator Obama can't win.

Obama is a patsy. He's being used to defeat Senator Clinton's candidacy. If she's eliminated, the media will sink Obama with scandals quicker than you can say Rudy Giuliani.

Clinton is no FDR, yet. She's intelligent, and she is a fighter.

She speaks of the "invisible people," just as FDR spoke of the "forgotten man." You know, the lower 80 to 90 percent of the U.S. population, who have seen their living standards continuously deteriorate, while swindlers on Wall Street like Bear Stearns receive hundreds of billions of dollars of corporate welfare.

We need an FDR-type solution to the insolvency of the present global casino economy, one that "promotes the general welfare" of the lower 80 percent of the people, not lines the pockets of the financial swindlers who have made such a mess. I have removed the Obama '08 sign from the front yard of the home I rent at the request of the homeowner's association. CC&R's prohibit any political signs in our front yards.

I am appalled at this request. My neighbors have allowed a lousy idea to become and remain part of the rules governing their little piece of paradise. This lazy complacency is exactly why many of the rights we've taken for granted in this country are no longer granted.

Someone wiser than me once said, "the world belongs to those who show up." I believe this is true. I also believe that we have to be very careful about who we allow to show up on our behalf.

This is why I am voting for Barack Obama, whom I believe speaks, leads and acts from his heart.

I encourage my neighbors to do the same. — Lon Fiala, Ashland
