Letters to the Editor, June 18

What God hates

I was surprised by the June 11 letter from Carl F. Worden. He wrote, “liberals are not Christian when they support everything God hates, like abortion and gay rights.”

I’m not sure how Carl defines liberal. Personally, I suggest that many of the acts and teachings of Jesus Christ were liberal. His teachings that the most important rule is love one another added to love your enemy, feed the hungry, clothe the naked, forgive the sinner and heal the sick seem liberal to me.

I was interested in what God hates. Billy Graham, decades ago, answered the question by quoting Solomon from the book of Proverbs. “The Lord hates an abomination to Him: A proud look, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked plans, feet that are swift in running to evil, a false witness that speaks lies, and one who sows discord among brethren.”

There is no mention in the Bible about abortion other than to say the newborn becomes human “after the first breath.” The mention of gay rights could be inferred by his commandment of “love your enemies”.

$6 to look

I am a native Oregonian 1932, a vet with a 80 percent disability — had a stroke.

My caregiver wife took me to Lake of the Woods for an outing. I guess she thought it would help in my recovery by seeing old memories as we used to camp there a lot in years past.

$6 for 20 minutes of looking at the lake I thought I already owned by virtue of being a citizen of this beautiful state. Something is wrong with this scenario.

Our ‘Christian’ president

In regard to the recent letter claiming the president is a Christian just trying to do his best: a few points.

Instead of overturning the tables of the money-changers, Trump, with the help of his Republican minions, gave them a tax cut. Instead of feeding the hungry, they are trying to cut food stamps, CHIP and Meals on Wheels. For those who were thirsty, Trump and his minions have allowed the EPA to once again pollute the waterways (lead or coal ash, anyone?).

For those who came to our country as strangers, Trump and Sessions are separating them from their children and locking them up. For those who are poor, Trump and Co. are making sure they work for any money they receive. For the sick, they are making sure that health care is financially out of reach, especially if you have pre-existing conditions. Instead of visiting those in prison, they want to privatize them.

“Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.” So when you need to answer the question: What would Jesus do? Just do the opposite of what Trump and the Republicans do.

Sessions has company

Attorney General Jeff Sessions is using the Bible to justify the separation of children from their parents seeking entry. He could just as easily use it to justify slavery, but I doubt that will happen. I guess that makes him a “selective Christian,” but he has a lot of company.
