Run local photos
I love our Mail Tribune and appreciate its coverage of both local and national news.
I was shocked, however, to find that an intimidating photo of militants marching in Portland was placed just below Nick Morgan’s July 1, page 5 article about a local rally that opposed Trump’s disastrous immigration policies. The caption below that photo is accurate, however a casual reader might miss it and assume that these two militants were a part of the local protest in Medford on that Saturday.
By most estimates, we had close to 1,000 participants — families with children, young people, older folks, local clergy and a number of local politicians — who were upset about the separation of children from their parents at the border. They made their case peacefully and respectfully.
If you are unable to send a local photographer to cover any of our events, I would be happy to provide you with a set of images that reflects our actions. To that end, I’m providing you with some of my photos of this event.
Particularly during these trying times, journalistic accuracy is paramount.
Considering all sides
Thank you for your “Journalism Matters” front page and editorial. I think they go hand in glove with the Declaration of Independence which you also reprinted, as well as with our Constitution.
Those who criticize the media as one-sided evidently do not read the Mail Tribune. This paper publishes many letter writers and commentators with whom I vehemently disagree! Yet occasionally, they get me to reconsider my own assumptions.
I am thankful for having the opportunity — and the freedom — to consider other perspectives.
Merkley works for whom?
One has to admire Sen. Jeff Merkley, a Democrat, and his outrageously outraged outrage. For years he sat in silence while the same parent-child separations occurred under the previous administration because people attempted to enter the country illegally and disregarded our immigration laws. Now, grasping a politically expedient opportunity, he seizes the day and grandstands. Why doesn’t he work at securing the border and supporting legal immigration which will end parent-child separation? Symbolism not substance!
Does Senator Merkley favor open borders? Admitting illegals without vetting? “Catch and release” over “catch and return?” Seems so. He never speaks of a solution to the “border problem.”
Also, by his grandstanding against the senate’s approval of Associate Justice Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court, we know Senator Merkley is against strict interpretation of the United States Constitution. He prefers a Supreme Court that is a politburo, that will do his will and that of liberals and progressives who feel their ideas are better than those of the Founders of this country. Why is the senator working against the general welfare of the majority of Americans, but working for admitting unvetted illegal aliens into the country?
