I was very glad to see that the new welcome center will be opening in April. I was wondering, who will be running it? The reason I ask is I would like to apply for a job to work there.
— Carl, Ashland
The state tourism promotion agency Travel Oregon will move into the welcome center portion of the new Siskiyou Rest Area and Welcome Center just south of Ashland, according to the Oregon Department of Transportation.
Ashland-based Adroit Construction is scheduled to complete the second phase of the $11.8 million project in April, ODOT said.
As for staffing, Travel Oregon officials said this week they are still determining a staffing model for the welcome center, which might include making an agreement with a destination management organization.
A destination management organization is an organization that’s purpose is enhancing the local economy through the purchase of room nights, food and beverages, retail items, transportation, visitor services and more, according to Travel Oregon.
Examples of Southern Oregon destination management organizations include the Ashland Chamber of Commerce, Travel Medford and the Southern Oregon Visitors Association, according to Travel Oregon’s website.
Whichever staffing model Travel Oregon uses, the state agency said it will post information about available positions at industry.traveloregon.com/organization/job-opportunities/.
The responsibilities of welcome center staff members will include providing accurate, comprehensive local and state travel information and personalized, concierge-style assistance to inspire visitors and improve their experience, Travel Oregon said.
