Snowboarder search heads into night

The search for a missing Medford snowboarder on Mount Ashland continued into the night Monday amid freezing fog conditions.

Eli Kepsel, 27, of Medford, was reported missing at 9:28 a.m. this morning by family members after he failed to return from a Sunday snowboarding trip to the Mt. Ashland Ski Area, according to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office.

Mt. Ashland Ski Patrol members found Kepsel’s car still parked at the ski area this morning, deputies said.

Search-and-rescue staff and volunteers are checking likely routes beyond the ski area and are asking anyone who saw Kepsel since Sunday morning to call 541-776-7206.

The search continued well past nightfall this evening in areas where the National Weather Service has issued a weather warning for freezing fog tonight.

Kepsel was described as 5-feet-9 and 165 pounds with brown hair and brown eyes. He was last seek wearing a bright yellow-green coat, and his snowboard has a blue bottom on it, deputies said.
