Phoenix rallies past Mazama, settles for Skyline split

TALENT — Phoenix scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to rally past Mazama in the first game before the visiting Vikings rolled to a 9-1 win in Game 2 in a Skyline Conference baseball doubleheader Friday at Hagler-James Field.

The Pirates lost the first game of the three-game series 9-5 on Wednesday and were two outs away from dropping the second before staging a dramatic comeback capped by senior Chase Courtney’s walk-off single.

Jonathan Halligan sparked the rally with a one-out hit and scored on Braeden Watts’ single to left. Following an error, a passed ball and an intentional walk, Liam Serean singled up the middle to drive in the tying run. That set up Courtney, who stroked a 1-1 pitch off Mazama reliever Aidan Schram that bounced just out of the reach of Mazama’s shortstop.

“They were really excited, I can’t even put it into words,” Phoenix coach Bill Hutchinson said. “That’s the second time they’ve done that this year.”

Halligan went 2-for-3 with an RBI and Watts 2-for-4 to lead Phoenix (11-5, 4-2 Skyline) in the opener. For Mazama (5-6, 2-4), McCrea Hamilton had a double and a triple and Bill Miller homered.

In the second game, Mazama scored three runs in the first inning, led 6-0 through three and rode pitcher Devin Monteith to a dominant series-clinching victory.

Monteith struck out three and walked two while allowing one run in the complete-game performance, and Hamilton, who had four RBIs on the day, had two hits.

Phoenix’s next three-game Skyline series, which starts with one game Wednesday, is against Henley (12-1, 4-0), the 2017 Class 4A state runner-up.

“We’ve got some things to work on for sure, especially offensively,” Hutchinson said, “but we always play Henley tough.”
