Drink a beer, give a sick child a dream trip

A Southern Oregon University student is raising money to send a very sick Klamath Falls child to Disneyland.

She has arranged for 10 Barrel Brewing Company from Bend to “take over the taps” at Growler Guys in Ashland from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 3, with money from raffle tickets going toward the trip for 13-year-old Troy Price and his mother, Regina Price.

SOU honors student Caitlin Diefendorf says her goal is to raise at least $2,000 to cover the expenses of the trip. So far, she’s raised $460.

“This trip would offer Troy the opportunity to overcome the challenges he is facing on a daily basis, even if only for a few days,” Diefendorf said. “If for any reason Troy is unable to complete the trip, the money raised will help pay his extensive medical expenses.”

Troy suffers from a severe immunodeficiency disorder.

“This means that specialized immune cells in his body, normally associated with fighting off bacteria and other diseases, are attacking his own healthy cells, causing complications with liver function and lesions. Immune thrombocytopenia is a disease affecting the platelets in his blood, which are associated with normal blood clotting functions,” Diefendorf said. “He was diagnosed several years ago and has been fighting since.”

Diefendorf is a senior who plans to go to medical school. She met Troy while interning with his oncologist at Asante Pediatric Oncology over the summer. As a part of the Honors College program, students must complete two “Take the Lead” projects to graduate. Fundraising for this trip is one of her projects. She explained the projects require that the student test their leadership skills and that the project benefit or educate the community.

“Through fundraising for Troy, I am helping educate my community about pediatric immune deficiencies,” Diefendorf said. “Not only will this event educate the community, but it will invite people to help support a local child who is battling a very rough diagnosis.”

Diefendorf has reached out to local organizations for donations, as well as created a GoFundMe account (gf.me/u/mhffs4).

Raffle tickets cost $1, and prizes will be given throughout the night.

Limited-edition beers by 10 Barrel Brewing will be featured at the event, along with some of its most popular brews. The limited-edition beers include a pilsner by Smooth Talker, a sour by Key Lime Pie, and Oktober Fest and Fresh Hop IPA by Fukton. Other beers on tap will include a lager by Cerreza Negra, an IPA by Lil Squeezy, a cider by Softcore, and Sasquatch, Pearl and Sinister Black Ale.

“Troy is always cooperative and kind regardless of the circumstances. He is a very courageous and deserving young man,” Diefendorf said. “The support of the community would mean a lot to Troy, not only in funding his trip to Disneyland but knowing there is a greater support system and people who care about his battle.”
