Comic Con coming soon

If events such as “drone racing,” a “Harry Potter World” and “cosplay karaoke” are enough to make your ears — Vulcan or otherwise — perk up, an annual event at the Medford library this month will feature all three and much more.

The Medford Comic Con is scheduled from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 28, and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday, April 29, at the Medford library, 205 S. Central Ave.

The happening will include science fiction, fantasy, gaming, literature, art, science and media offerings inside the library, while events, workshops and exhibits will be available at Rogue Community College on Riverside Avenue, Astral Games, 125 S. Central Ave., and outside of the library along Ninth Street between Riverside Avenue and Central Avenue, and Bartlett Street between East Eighth and Ninth streets.

The event started in 2015 as a way to celebrate the library’s summer reading theme “Every Hero Has a Story.” Attendance has continued to grow each year, from 2,000 at the inaugural event to about 5,000 in 2016 and 12,000 in 2017, the event website says.

Offerings this year include Harry Potter-themed activities and offerings at Harry Potter’s World, drone races hosted by Rogue Hack Lab, costume contests and a fan art display. Workshop and panel offerings include comic books, J.R.R. Tolkien and the world of Middle Earth, augmented reality, using comics to promote literacy, geocaching, and creating visual and makeup effects in movies.

Astral Games will offer open play with multiple board-game demos.

A schedule of all events is available at

More than 70 vendors will set up shop both days, with merchants selling a variety of comics, art, and cosplay props. Anyone wanting a bite to eat will have 10 food trucks parked along South Bartlett Street to choose from.

The library will be offering commemorative superhero-themed library cards.
