ANDERSON, Calif. — Ten Crater wrestlers advanced to the semifinals to give the Comets the lead at the 26-school Nor-Cal Best in the North tournament at Anderson High on Friday.
Recording two pins after first-round byes for the Comets were Hunter Grant (113 pounds), Bryce Cwiklinski (132), Logan Meek (152), Jace Godley (160), Cavin Gillispie (195) and Wally Pendleton (220).
Tommy Winnington, at 170, won all three of his matches by fall.
Zeth Brower (106), Mitchell Childress (113) and Dallas Howard (126) also advanced to the semifinals for Crater, which has 125.5 points. Will C. Wood High is second (97.5) and North Valleys third (80).
“They just did a great job of attacking and putting pressure on their opponent,” Crater head coach Greg Haga said of his squad.
DOC BUCHANAN INVITATIONAL: At Clovis, Calif., North Medford's Cole Hornbrook won two matches before falling in the quarterfinals at the 93-team Doc Buchanan Invitational.
Bakersfield's Sam Loera earned a 7-3 decision over Hornbrook in the quarterfinal round. In the round of 16, Hornbrook picked up a 14-11 decision over Windsor's Beau Colombini. In his opener, Hornbrook won 6-2 over Malachi Lawrence of Lake Stevens, Wash.
Hornbrook will wrestle in the consolation bracket today.
