Southern Oregon University's production of Bertolt Brecht's comical 1941 "parable play" mirrors the rise of Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party in pre-World War II Germany — but gives us Arturo Ui, a small-time gangster as he rises to power in the Chicago cauliflower trade. Jackie Apodaca directs. Performances are set for 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Nov. 11-12, Thursday through Saturday, Nov. 17-19, and 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 19-20, at the Black Swan Theatre on the Oregon Shakespeare Festival campus, 15 S. Southern Oregon Concert Band

The community band, conducted by Don Bieghler, will present "You're a Grand Old Flag," a Veterans Day concert to honor those who serve our country, at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 11, in the Stedman Auditorium at Central Medford High School, 815 S. Oakdale Ave., Medford. The program will include Clare Grundman’s "The Blue and the Gray (A Civil War Suite)" and a “Salute to Bob Hope,” along with a “Star Spangled Spectacular” that will highlight the music of George M. Cohan. Service flags will be presented during the Armed Forces Salute, and John Philip Sousa’s "Stars and Stripes Forever" will close the show. Admission is by donation. Jefferson State Choral Coalition

The American jazz and pop music choral ensemble, directed by Kirby Shaw, will present "American Musical Experience" at 3 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 12, in the Music Recital Hall on the Southern Oregon University campus, 405 S. Mountain Ave., Ashland. The show highlights such '50s favorites as Elvis Presley's "Shake, Rattle and Roll" and The Del Vikings' "Come Go With Me." There also will be a tribute to trumpet icon Louis Armstrong, with "Saint Louis Blues" and "All of Me." Look for Shaw's arrangements of the spiritual "Joshua Fit the Battle of Jericho," the 16th-century madrigal "Now is the Month of Maying" and more.
