Since You Asked: Rail ties for the taking — with permission

What happens to the old and used railroad ties that are sitting next to the railroad? Are they free for the taking?

— Danni H., Merlin

They are very-much available to the public, but there is a catch.

According to Central Oregon & Pacific Railroad assistant general manager Patrick Kerr, before picking up ties you have to get a release from CORP to take them.

"We've stacked them in certain areas so people can get to them," Kerr said. "We give a lot of them away for landscape work all of the time. But if you don't have a release, you're trespassing and stealing; but we're more than willing to work with people."

To obtain a release, call road master Slim Mattox at 541-957-2506.
