Since You Asked: Callahan's moving 'at lightning speed'

Could you update us on the progress of Callahan's rebuilding process and when it plans to reopen?

— Gary J., Medford

Callahan's Lodge burned to the ground during Labor Day Weekend 2006. The long-awaited rebirth is moving along rapidly, and Donna Bergquist, who owns the landmark restaurant and lodge with her husband Ron, says Callahan's is on target for reopening near the end of June or early July. Electrical and plumbing inspections are completed with wiring for alarm, sound system and telephones being done now.

The snowpack on the north side of the building is delaying external landscape work.

"Part of getting the occupancy certificate is getting the landscaping in and our yard is afloat in melting snow," Donna Bergquist said. "We're going to have to bring in heavy equipment to replace trees."

She says insulation work is scheduled the final week of March followed by drywall. Reservations and deposits are now accepted for July into 2009. A redesigned Web site ( should be operational the first week in April.

"We're moving at lightning speed," Bergquist said. "To see the lights on in the new building gives me a real good feeling."
