William J. "Bill" Ferns


Bill died in his sleep Sunday, July 20, 2008, at home with his wife Colleen by his side.

He grew up in the Phoenix, Ore., area, attending the Fern Valley Grade School and graduating from Phoenix High School in 1950.

Bill worked and lived for many years in Prospect, Ore. He retired from ODOT as Maintenance Supervisor and spent several winter hours plowing snow to keep the highways open for the traffic.

He was a member of the Jackson County Search and Rescue in the Prospect area. He was also the skipper of the Sea Scout Group. He was highly sought after to cook for various organizations, including the Fly In at the Prospect Airport every year. His Cowboy Beans were loved by everyone.

Bill was a life member of Myrtle Masonic Lodge #38 at Myrtle Point, Ore.; attended the Cascade Masonic Lodge #208 at Shady Cove, Ore. He was a member of the Medford Valley Scottish Rite, Hillah temple, and served as Captain of the Wrecking Crew, Hillbilly Clan, Desert Patrol. He was also a member of Mazama Teocalli #39, order of Quetzalcoatl as an OKET, and the Royal Order of the Jesters.

Bill is preceded in death by his parents, William and Myrtle Ferns and two stepbrothers, Abe Hoffman and Bud Hoffman.

He is survived by his wife Colleen, whom he married in 1992, children; Peggy and Robert Jump, Rick and Renee Ferns, Tom and Karen Ferns. Stepchildren, Julie Logston and Tom & Kim Logston, and six grandchildren.

At his request no service will be held. A private family service will be held to scatter his ashes. A Celebration of Life Potluck is planned at the Prospect Lion's Park on Saturday, Aug. 2, at 1:30 p.m.-4 p.m.

In lieu of flowers donations may be sent to the Shriners Children Hospital in Portland, Ore., or Providence Hospice.
