Warren Stearns

Warren Stearns

Warren Stearns passed away Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2009, and we are poorer for his passing. Warren was a gentle man. A man of integrity, who was kind to everyone, including his wife's cats though he was not terribly fond of them. He was forgiving, loyal to his family and friends, and he was an avid Ducks fan. He liked to play penny-ante poker with some of his old friends, the family was instructed not to call after 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday because he was preparing to either host the game or travel to the game. Warren had the ability to see the humor in any situation.

Warren was born Sept. 29, 1935, in Shelby, Mont., to Guy and Doris Hughes Stearns. His family moved from Montana in May of 1944, and they lived first in Grants Pass, then in Roseburg, finally settling in Medford in 1947. He graduated from Medford Senior High in 1953, after which he joined the U.S. Air Force. He served in the Air Force for four years and when he returned to Medford he went to work for the U.S. Forest Service. He retired from the Forest Service in Springfield in 1982. Being too young to really retire, he became a night watchman for a little while and then he and Target discovered each other and they formed a working relationship for several years.

Warren and Beverly Roland were married in Eugene in March of 1978. He never let a day go by without telling her that he loved her and he assumed the responsibility for their home when her health failed. Warren had long wanted to visit England so he could see the place that his ancestors came from and he was finally able to go in 2006 . It was his intention to visit Scotland in the fall of 2008 but illness intervened.

He is survived by his children, Steve Stearns, of Portland, Shoran Adair, of Springfield, Jay Stearns, of Junction City, and Neil Stearns, of Roseburg; stepchildren, Barbara Munoz, of Portland, and Michael Bacon, of Vancouver, Wash.

Also surviving and saddened by Warren's passing are his siblings, Geri Cook, of Medford, Myrna McKinney, of Davis, Calif., Michael Stearns, of Oakland, Calif., and Bob Stearns, of Medford; several grandchildren; and a few great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Beverly.

Memorial service to be announced at a later date.
