Susanne T. Huggins

August 25, 1926 - February 13, 2011

Susanne Thompson Huggins, our beloved mother and dear friend, passed away on February 13, 2011. She was born to Charles and Mildred Thompson on August 25, 1926, in Mt. Holly, N.J., where she shared her childhood with her sister, "Honey" (Thompson) Hoagland.

A Duke University graduate, she taught at Coos Bay Junior High School before marrying George C. Huggins, Jr., on

September 30, 1950, in New Brunswick, N.J. They settled in Salem, Ore., where George worked for Huggins Insurance. Susie was busy as a homemaker on Heather Lane, where the couple raised their three children, and enjoyed making

lifelong friendships with their neighbors, and members of First Presbyterian Church, Rotary, and Jaycees.

After purchasing Medford Insurance in 1969, Susie and George spent the next 28 years enjoying a full life in

Southern Oregon. She spent her time, energy, and wonderful creativity on her family, and as an active participant in

Westminster Presbyterian Church, Rogue Art Gallery and Southern Oregon Arts Council, PEO, American Association of University Women, and the Britt Music Festivals. Susie also enjoyed painting, crafts and needlework, playing bridge, hosting parties, traveling, Japanese Ikebana flower arranging, and collecting antique tin toys. She had an abiding affection for dogs; and was an avid supporter of the Medford Black Tornado, the Oregon Ducks, and the Duke Blue Devils.

In 1997, they moved back to Salem, Ore., settling in

Salemtowne, where dear friends, family, and neighbors

kindly supported them. Shortly after George's death in 2001, Susie began her long journey with dementia.

The family wishes to sincerely thank Titus and Divina

Madlangbayan, and Diane Fernandez, of Golden Care Adult Foster Home. Our words of gratitude seem inadequate for their unwavering care of Mom during these past four years.

Susanne delightfully added to the lives of all who knew her. She will be especially missed by her children and their spouses, Milenie and Rich Schwarz, of Germany, Stu

Huggins and Judy Maag, of Seattle, Wash., and Brad and Barb Huggins, of Salem, Ore.; grandchildren, Ryan Hiniker, Miles and Carrie Hiniker, Liz Maag, Jenny Maag and Jill Maag, and Kristen Huggins; great-grandchildren, Logan, Magnus and Morgan Campbell; and many loving nieces and

nephews.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, March 6, 2011, at 2:00 p.m., at Virgil T. Golden Funeral Service, 605

Commercial St. SE, Salem, Ore. Your thoughts and stories of her are encouraged. Following the service, all are welcome at the home of Brad and Barb Huggins, 3591 Begonia Drive Northwest, Salem, Ore., 503-581-5480. In lieu of flowers, contributions to the Oregon Alzheimer's Network are appreciated.
