Sue Goldman was born December 2, 1934 in Rock Island, Ill., to Ruth and Elmo Schmacht, the first of five children. She was physically active throughout her life, perhaps the fastest runner in her elementary school, then skiing, water skiing, especially hiking, and backpacking. Sue had a lovely voice and was a member of the award-winning Augustana College Choir and performed on the Ed Sullivan Show and in many concert halls. She earned a BA degree from Wichita State University, married Bill Broughton, a classmate, and raised three children Stacy, Tim, and Jay. The marriage ended in divorce and in 1987 she married Lou Goldman, a WSU professor.
Sue was an interior designer, then antique dealer, and then she established a gift shop, The Haymaker. This led to creating mail order catalogs The Best of Kansas and The Best of Oz.
After retirement in 2000, the Goldman's relocated to Ashland where she was active with hiking groups, book clubs, and OLLI.
Sue is survived by her husband, Lou; her three children; siblings, Sandra, Sally, Sharon, and John; and niece, Monica, an Ashland resident.
Sue suffered a stroke on September 4th and passed away Friday, September 6, 2013. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 11, 2013, at the Havurah, 185 North Mountain, Ashland, Ore.
