Sidney Ernest Roberts Jr.

Sidney Ernest Roberts Jr., 89, of Ashland, Ore., passed away on June 19, 2008.

He was born April 21, 1919 in Oakland, Calif., and attended Piedmont High School and later graduated from the University of California in Berkeley. He received his Law Degree from Boalt Hall in Berkeley and was a partner at the San Francisco firm Orrick, Herrington and Sutcliff, where he practiced law for more than 35 years. He played an integral role in gaining approval to construct the TransAmerica Pyramid, which at the time was quite controversial but has since become the most recognizable symbol of San Francisco's skyline.

He served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Germany in World War II, where he was a radio operator.

Upon retirement in 1984, Sidney and his wife, Mary Dell, moved to Ashland.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Dell Roberts, whom he married in 1942; his children, Sidney E. (Bob) Roberts of Moraga, Calif., Bruce Roberts of Ashland, Mary Ann Andreotti of Castro Valley, Calif., and Peter Roberts of San Ramon, Calif.; his grandchildren, Sydney Roberts of Santa Barabara Calif., Hilary Wells of Tucson, Ariz., Elissa Accardo of Pleasanton, Calif., Jared Andreotti of Castro Valley, Calif., and Jason Roberts of Napa, Calif.; and five great-grandchildren, Jacob Andreotti and Jenelle Andreotti of Castro Valley, Calif., Harper Wells and Sascha Wells of Tucson, Ariz., and Milo Bustany of Santa Barbara, Calif.
