February 15, 1933 - June 18, 2012
Sheila passed away, from complications due to a stroke, at Medford Rehabilitation and Health Care in Medford, Ore., where she had been residing for approximately six months before her passing.
Sheila was the 2nd daughter of four girls born to Lydia and Carl Bowen in La Crosse, Wisc. She was a gifted ballet dancer, adored music of all kinds, a cat lover and a hard worker. Sheila met and married Jon Soderlund in Albuquerque, New Mexico in 1952/53. They moved to San Francisco, Calif., and a few years later, made their permanent home in Jacksonville, Ore.
In Jacksonville, she and Jon purchased the old "Applebaker Barn", an historical building built in 1880 and which was later moved from North 3rd Street to its present location on West "D" Street in 1915. Sheila and Jon also purchased a small adjacent cottage which was built around the same time, and this is also an historical structure. Sheila and Jon lived in the cottage and turned the barn into an Antiques and Collectibles shop.
Sheila and Jon enjoyed running the shop, purchasing and refinishing antiques to sell, and living a quiet life with their many cats. Sheila took up painting in the 1980s and discovered herself to be quite a gifted oil painter of animals, especially portraits of cats.
Sheila is predeceased by her parents; her husband Jon, who passed in 2005; and her youngest sister, Denise Strittmater. She is survived by her older sister, Carolyn Hawley (Nice,Calif.); younger sister, Donna Hammer (Ladylakes, Fla.); two nieces; two nephews; and many grand-nephews; one grand niece; and one great-grand-niece; and many loving friends and neighbors.
She was well loved and respected in the Jacksonville community, and in particular at the Medford Rehab Center in Medford. Her family would like to give special thanks to the wonderful nurses, care givers, and staff at the Medford Rehab Center, as well as, to her loyal friends Andreas, Andy and Norman, among others.
Her family has had a private service. Sheila's final resting place will be with her husband Jon at the VA cemetery near Jacksonville, Oregon.
In lieu of flowers, please send a charitable donation to the SPCA or other local animal rescue in Sheila's name. Especially for cat rescue.
