Ruth Emma Melton

Ruth Emma Melton, 86, of Shady Cove, died Friday, November 9, 2007, at Edgewood Home Care, after a struggle with Parkinson's Disease.

Ruth was born March 5, 1921, in San Antonio, Texas, to Charles and Edith Garven. On June 28, 1941, she married James I. Melton in her parents home, in Burbank, Calif. Jim preceded her in death in 2001.

She lived in the Medford area since 1974, moving here from Beaverton. She moved to Shady Cove in 2001, to be with her daugher and son-in-law.

Ruth was a lifelong homemaker and she loved to entertain family and friends. She had an impressive cookbook collection, and in the final stages of her life, in her mind, she was still cooking. Ruth was an avid reader and always had a book by her chair. She and Jim made many trips to Reno, and they both enjoyed video poker. Whatever town they lived in, Ruth volunteered wherever she could. She was a pink lady at Rogue Valley Medical Center for over 25 years. Her greatest wish was to have her family closer so she could spoil all of them.

Ruth is survived by her son, James I. Melton (Kim) of Temecula, Calif.; daughter, Pat Roberts (John) of Shady Cove; son, Randall Melton, of North Carolina; sister, Charlene Smoker (Jack), of Burbank, Calif.; grandchildren, Kerry, Jon (Charlotte) and Brendan; step grandchildren, Mark, April, Brad, Mark, Lee and Jim; great-grandchildren, Morgan and Colin; nieces, Vicki, Gayle, Robin, Lori, and Allison. Ruth said if she had a second daughter it would have been Suzanne Sherrets, whom she loved. Thank you, Suzanne, for all your love and concern for mom over the years. Last but not least, she leaves behind her beloved dog, Sadie, and cat, George.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Jim; and brothers, Bernie Garven, and Bob Garven; a nephew, Jim; and niece, Susie.

The family would like to thank all of Mom's friends who visited her so often and made it a better day for her. We would especially like to thank Debbie and Marcy Lester, of Edgewood Home Care for their wonderful care of our mom.

At Ruth's request, no service will be held.
